Before buying a kune kune pig, a few things I'd advise:
- You must contact DEFRA to obtain a holding license number. This will be required when your pig is collected/delivered.
- Find a vet in your area that treats pigs and register your details.
- Kune Kune’s need a secure field or similar. Pig wire or electric fencing is better than mesh, which they might squeeze through. (It is recommended that an acre is required for approx 5/6 pigs). Access to clean drinking water is a must, they drink quite a lot.
- Insure they have a warm, dry, draft free house. Some owners like traditional wooden arks, others like corrugated iron & wood or even sheds.
- Kune Kune pigs love grass so a good supply will stand them in good stead. I feed my pigs feed pellets that are for Pot Bellied and Kune Kune Pet pigs. These have a lower protein content than your standard pig pellets. Their feed is supplemented with fresh fruit and veg (NEVER FEED YOUR PIGS MEAT/DAIRY(inc eggs)/FISH/OR ANYTHING THAT HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THESE).
- Your piglets should be wormed before they come to you. I worm mine with an injection that kills off any mange or lice at the same time. Pigs should be wormed every 4-6 months. If they have not had their first Erysipelas injection you will need to get this done. They have a booster 4 weeks after their first injection and then twice every year.
- There are probably things that I haven’t listed above, please feel free to call or email me with any questions that you might have.
Have fun!
